Conservatives secure emergency debate on Canadian vaccine supply

OTTAWA, ON – The Hon. Michelle Rempel Garner, Conservative Shadow Minister for Health, issued the following statement regarding tonight’s emergency debate in the House of Commons on the lack of vaccine supply in Canada:

“With emerging news that Canada’s supply could be impacted by potential export controls that Europe is considering for COVID-19 vaccines, Justin Trudeau needs to immediately come clean with his plan.

“Yesterday, Conservatives stood up for Canadians in the House of Commons and requested an emergency debate on the lack of access to COVID-19 vaccines in Canada. Tonight, Parliament will begin this critical debate as Canadians continue to see alarming delays in delivery of vaccines to our country. Without a robust and expedient plan to get vaccines to Canadians, our workers and families will continue to suffer in the midst of this pandemic.

“We know that this week Canada will receive zero vaccine doses. Zero. Meanwhile, across the country, premiers continue to raise serious concerns with vaccine supply. It is the responsibility of the federal government to procure vaccines for Canadians. Questions regarding supply and the government’s plan remain unanswered. Why is there so much secrecy about the vaccines?

“Parliamentarians and premiers alike have no information about the delivery schedule. Even Liberal Members are confused about what the government is doing.

“Yesterday, Parliamentary Secretary and Liberal MP Greg Fergus said that to reach the government’s goals on vaccines they would need two more vaccines to be approved in Canada. The Minister of Procurement later said that this was not true. This government’s COVID-19 plan is so chaotic that not even their own spokespeople know what’s going on. How are Canadians supposed to have confidence in the Liberal government?

“Conservatives will continue to press the government for clarity so that the provinces have enough time to adjust their vaccination plans.”
