Ottawa, ON – John Barlow, Conservative Shadow Minister for Agriculture, Agri-Food and Food Security, Dave Epp, Conservative Deputy Shadow Minister for Agriculture, Agri-Food and Food Security, and Richard Lehoux, Conservative Deputy Shadow Minister for Agriculture, Agri-Food and Food Security, released the following statement on efforts to combat skyrocketing food prices:
“Yesterday’s Food Price Report confirms what Conservatives have been warning about for years – the cost of living is skyrocketing under the Trudeau Liberals.
“Conservatives are calling on the Liberals to work with provinces to adopt a grocery supply code to deal with retailers’ abusive pricing and contracting practices against farmers, producers, and processors.
“This code will ensure families have access to a reliable, affordable supply of food on grocery store shelves, and afford protections for the hard-working farmers, producers, and processors that have fees and fines imposed on them by certain grocery retail giants.
“Next year, families will pay an extra $1000 to feed themselves. Already, 60 per cent of families with kids under 18 are concerned they might not earn enough money to feed their family. The usage of food backs, and desperate families shoplifting at grocery stores across Canada have seen a dramatic rise.
“With more than half of Canadians on the brink of insolvency, something must be done.
“Canada’s Conservatives are focused on solutions to the Liberals’ cost-of-living crisis. We’ll continue fighting for Canadians left behind by Justin Trudeau’s out of control spending, to get the rising cost of food in Canada down, and for our world-class farmers, producers, and processors.”
