Conservative members of the Special Committee on Canada-China Relations have called for an emergency meeting to discuss urgent issues including the situation in Hong Kong, the Chinese government’s influence at the World Health Organization, and Minister Champagne’s continuing personal financial relationship with a Chinese state-owned bank.

MPs Garnett Genuis, Dan Albas, Leona Alleslev, and John Williamson sent a letter to the Clerk of the Canada-China Relations Committee this morning requesting the emergency meeting and calling for the committee be reinstated. Members of all opposition parties have publicly expressed support for the committee resuming its work. Thus far the Liberal government has refused to allow the committee to meet virtually.

At the emergency meeting, Conservative MPs intend to put forward a motion to invite Minister François-Philippe Champagne to appear as soon as possible, as well as to propose a work plan for the next few months.

“This committee must return to some semblance of regular sittings to discuss urgent issues surrounding the Canada-China relationship,” said MP Genuis. “The Trudeau Liberals need to let MPs do their job and deliver results for Canadians. That is why Conservatives have called for an emergency meeting of the Special Committee on Canada-China Relations.”
