FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

OTTAWA, ON – The Hon. Andrew Scheer, Leader of Canada’s Conservatives and of the Official Opposition, issued the following statement to mark Philippines Independence Day and Filipino Heritage Month:

“Today, Canadians of Filipino heritage join Filipinos around the world to celebrate the 122nd anniversary of the Declaration of Philippine Independence.  Canada and the Philippines shared values and mutual commitment to international and economic development have strengthened our friendship. We must continue to protect these values and our freedoms.

“Proudly, under our previous Conservative government, Canada received more immigrants from the Philippines than from anywhere else in the world. And in 2012, Prime Minister Stephen Harper appointed the late Senator Tobias Enverga Jr as Canada’s first senator of Filipino descent. Senator Enverga was a role model and leader within the Filipino community, serving in the Upper Chamber with great devotion and integrity. He was known for fiercely advocating for persons with disabilities and was a tireless champion of the inherent dignity and sanctity of human life.

“The month of June also marks Filipino Heritage Month. Canada is fortunate to be home to such a vibrant Filipino community. As one of Canada’s fastest-growing communities, over 700,000 hard-working and passionate Filipino-Canadians contribute to our country as front line healthcare professionals, business owners, and leaders.

“I know that celebrations will be different this year due to the pandemic.  I want to thank all front line workers for their dedication and the sacrifices they have made for our country as we navigate through this time of uncertainty together.

“On behalf of Canada’s Conservatives, happy Philippines Independence Day and Filipino Heritage Month to all celebrating!

“Maligayang araw ng kalayaan!”
