Ottawa, ON – The Hon. Michael Chong, Conservative Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement:

“Conservatives are concerned by the military coup in Myanmar, which runs counter to a peaceful and democratic transfer of power.

“The Myanmar military has declared a one-year state of emergency and taken control of the legislative, executive, and judicial branches of the government. They have also detained the civilian leadership.

“Conservatives condemn these actions; they undermine the important democratic principle of free and fair elections. We are calling on the Myanmar military to release the civilian government officials.
 
“Conservatives are calling on the Liberal government to work with our allies, like the United States, to assemble a coalition of like-minded countries to defend democratic principles and democratic countries around the world.”
