OTTAWA, ON – The Hon. Erin O’Toole, Leader of Canada’s Conservatives and the Official Opposition, today released the following statement on the Conservative Opposition Day motion calling for the creation of a special House of Commons committee devoted to Canada-U.S. relations:

“Budgets don’t balance themselves, vaccines won’t deliver themselves, and our economy won’t rebuild itself. The time to plan to secure our future is now.

“Today, Canada’s Conservatives are introducing a motion to create a special committee on one of the most important pillars of our recovery: the economic relationship between Canada and the United States.

“Trade between Canada and the U.S. exceeds $1.5-billion per day, but “Buy America” procurement rules and an absence of government advocacy for North American energy security puts that in jeopardy.

“At a time when both our countries need to be focused on getting people back to work and restoring our ways of life post-COVID-19, this committee will get answers for Canadians and fight to secure our future.

“Canadians need to get back to work. We need a plan to create jobs in every sector and every region in this country. Canada cannot afford another failure to plan.

“We must begin planning to reopen and rebuild our economy, and to get Canadians back to work.

“We must work together to secure our economy. We must start now to secure our future.”
