FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

OTTAWA, ON – The Honourable Andrew Scheer, Leader of Canada’s Conservatives and of the Official Opposition, issued the following statement on Ramadan:

“At sundown this evening, Muslims in Canada and around the world will mark the beginning of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

“Ramadan reminds us of the importance of helping the less fortunate. During the current COVID-19 pandemic, this is especially important.  Religious communities across the country, including Canada’s Muslim community, have stepped up to help their neighbours by organizing food banks, delivering groceries and ready-made meals to the elderly and those in need, and donating protective equipment to hospitals and other institutions. Thank you for your numerous acts of kindness.

“This year’s Ramadan will be different, as Canadians practice social distancing. Despite the hardships that people of faith are enduring during this unprecedented time, I hope this month will serve as an opportunity to reflect on the importance of hope and remind us of all the blessings in our lives.

“While families and friend will not be able to physically gather at community centres and mosques for iftar dinners this year, I hope that all members of the Muslim community will be able to break the fast with loved ones using online videoconferencing platforms.

“On behalf of Canada’s Conservatives, I would like to extend my best wishes to Muslims observing Ramadan, in Canada and around the world.

“Ramadan Mubarak.”
