FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

OTTAWA, ON – The Hon. Andrew Scheer, Leader of Canada’s Conservatives and of the Official Opposition, issued the following statement to mark Eid-al-Fitr:

“Tonight, Muslim communities across Canada will celebrate Eid-al-Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan and a month of fasting.

“Also known as the ‘Festival of the Breaking of the Fast’, Eid-al-Fitr is observed by special prayer, sharing feasts and exchanging gifts with loved ones, and giving to those who are less fortunate.

“This year’s celebration will look different with prayers and festivities taking place online. I know how hard it is for members of the Muslim community not to gather with family and friends to celebrate. But this year, staying apart is the best way we can all show we care.

“Throughout this pandemic, Canadians have come together to offer comfort and support, whether through virtual services, delivering groceries to the elderly, helping neighbours, or collecting and donating personal protective equipment to hospitals. Thank you for all you have done and continue to do to enrich our free, prosperous and pluralistic society.

“On behalf of Canada’s Conservatives, I would like to extend my best wishes to all those celebrating Eid al-Fitr.

“Eid Mubarak.”
