Ottawa, ON – The Hon. Pierre Poilievre, Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada and the Official Opposition, released the following statement on Irish Heritage Month:

“In the 1840s, the Great Famine triggered a massive wave of Irish immigration to North America. As they fled poverty, millions of families joined their countrymen already settled here, establishing themselves in tight-knit communities where their culture and heritage would be preserved for generations.

“Today, more than 4.5 million Canadians with Irish heritage maintain the legacy of their ancestors who braved the journey across the Atlantic to build a better life. For decades, Irish Canadians have brightened our communities and enriched our country. The warmth of Irish hospitality continues to burn brightly at ceilidhs and kitchen parties, as music, laughter, and friendship bring people closer together.

“During March, Canadians observe Irish Heritage Month to celebrate the incredible history of Ireland and the priceless contributions that Irish Canadians have made to our country. Throughout the month, we honour the great figures of Irish history like William Butler Yeats and George Bernard Shaw, while also celebrating Irish Canadians like Thomas D’Arcy McGee, Nellie McClung, and legendary musician Stompin’ Tom Connors, who have helped make Canada into the country it is today.

“Irish Canadians have played an outsized role in our nation’s history, and Irish culture and heritage is a vibrant part of Canada’s rich cultural tapestry. On behalf of all Conservatives, I’d like to wish Canadians a Happy Irish Heritage Month.”
