Ottawa, ON – The Hon. Erin O’Toole, Leader of Canada’s Conservatives and the Official Opposition, released the following statement on Tisha B’Av:

“Tomorrow evening at sundown, the Jewish community in Canada and around the world will observe Tisha B’Av, a solemn day of remembrance and fasting.

“Marking the destruction of the First Temple in 586 BCE, as well as the Second Temple in 70 CE, Tisha B’Av is an observance of the numerous calamities that have affected the Jewish people.

“The saddest day of the Jewish calendar, Tisha B’Av reminds us of history’s tragic events, many of which originated with hate and fear.

“Sadly, antisemitism is still all too prevalent, both in Canada and abroad. Canada’s Conservatives will always stand with the Jewish people and will be steadfast in our commitment to defend religious freedom and combating antisemitism.

“On behalf of Canada’s Conservatives, I extend my best wishes to the Jewish community in Canada and around the world during this solemn and sacred day.”
