Ottawa, ON – The Hon. Candice Bergen, Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada and the Official Opposition, released the following statement on Portuguese Heritage Month:
“Hundreds of years ago, Portuguese explorers made their way to North America for the first time. Their voyages forever changed the course of history and laid the foundations for what would eventually become Canada.
“During June, Canada observes Portuguese Heritage Month, which provides all of us an opportunity to celebrate the vibrancy of Portuguese traditions and culture and reflect on our shared history.
“Canada is proud to be the home of nearly half a million Portuguese-Canadians who have made countless contributions to our country. Many Portuguese families have lived in Canada for generations and have shared their rich culture with great hospitality.
“This month, I encourage all Canadians to learn about Portugal’s incredible history and to discover the wealth of art, food, literature and tradition that Portuguese culture has to offer.
“Happy Portuguese Heritage Month.”
