Ottawa, ON – The Hon. Candice Bergen, Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada and the Official Opposition, released the following statement on Philippine Independence Day:

“On June 12, 1898, the Philippines declared their independence, ending over 300 years of Spanish colonial rule. The success of the Philippine Revolution would forever leave its mark on the hearts of Filipinos all over the world.

“The years that followed the establishment of the First Philippine Republic wouldn’t be easy. Foreign actors would continue to seek control over the Philippines, and work to stifle its independence.

“But over the years, through firm determination and resolve, the Philippines would develop into a strong and fiercely independent country. Today Filipinos and Filipino-Canadians are celebrating the legacy of the 1898 Declaration of Independence and honouring their history.

“Canada is proud to have a strong and vibrant Filipino community with nearly one million Canadians of Filipino descent. Today, I encourage all Canadians to celebrate alongside Filipinos and Filipino-Canadians and take some time to explore the incredible history and culture of the Philippines.

“On behalf of the Conservative Party of Canada, Happy Philippine Independence Day!”
