Ottawa, ON – Jag Sahota, Conservative Shadow Minister for Women and Gender Equality, released the following statement in recognition of International Women’s Day:

“Today we celebrate International Women’s Day. First celebrated in 1911, International Women’s Day is an opportunity for us to not only reflect on the achievements that the women before us have accomplished in the fight for gender equality, but also on the work that remains for our generation.

“As a woman, I am eternally grateful for their dedication and advocacy, but as I said in the House of Commons, I am looking forward to future generations looking back and being proud of our accomplishments and being able to build upon them. The work to build an equal Canada is never really complete.

“As a female MP in the Conservative Party of Canada, I am proud of our continued advocacy and our long history of supporting women across our country. Not only was it under a Conservative government that a woman’s right to vote was recognized, but women play a vital and leading role in our Party today.

“Unfortunately, I am very disheartened by the lack of action we are seeing from this Liberal government.

“In 2019, the Liberals promised Canadian women a National Action Plan to combat gender-based violence, but we have no plan. This broken promise is disheartening, especially at a time when women are disproportionately disadvantaged by the pandemic. Actions speak louder than words, and women and girls across Canada need a government that will support them.

“On International Women’s Day, and every day, Canada’s Conservatives will continue to call on the Liberal government to take real, meaningful action to support women across Canada as we focus on securing our future.”
