NDP-Liberal government divided over NATO commitments

Ottawa, ON – The Hon. Kerry-Lynne Findlay, Conservative Shadow Minister for National Defence, and Pierre Paul-Hus, Conservative Shadow Minister for Public Services and Procurement, issued the following statement on today’s vote on a Conservative opposition day motion:

“The fact that NDP members of the NDP-Liberal government voted against a Conservative motion that would call on Canada to increase our defence spending to meet our NATO commitments is sad and troubling.

“Today’s vote is proof that this NDP-Liberal government cannot be relied upon to make the necessary investments in our national defence to provide the women and men of the Canadian Armed Forces with the equipment they need.

“At a time when the world is becoming less safe, it is imperative that Canada contributes its fair share to the NATO alliance, which has safeguarded the peace and security that Canadians have enjoyed for the past 73 years.

“How can our NATO allies be confident that Canada will continue to be a trusted security partner when NDP members of Prime Minister Trudeau’s NDP-Liberal government vote against the principle of meeting our NATO spending commitments.

“How can Canadians be confident in the Prime Minister when his government hangs in the balance of a coalition partner whose activist base regularly debates policies like ‘phasing out the Canadian Armed Forces,’ and ‘removing the NATO nuclear ring around Russian borders.’

“Unfortunately, when it comes to important issues like keeping Canada secure in the world, this NDP-Liberal government cannot be trusted. Conservatives will continue to ensure that Canada remains a trusted NATO ally and that we make the necessary investments to keep Canadians safe and secure.”
