Ottawa, ON – Melissa Lantsman, Conservative Shadow Minister for Transport, Marilyn Gladu, Associate Conservative Shadow Minister for International Trade and Supply Chains, John Barlow, Conservative Shadow Minister for Agriculture, Agri-Food and Food Security, and Gérard Deltell, Conservative Shadow Minister for Innovation, Science and Industry, issued the following statement regarding the news that employees of Canadian Pacific Railway could strike Sunday:
“If the Liberal government fails to find a solution to the labour dispute between CP Rail and the Teamsters Canadian Rail Conference to prevent a railway worker strike, there will be devastating consequences for Canada’s economy, for critical supply chains, and for our recovery.
“Canadians need to know if the Liberal government has a plan to prevent a strike.
“For weeks, farmers, manufacturers, and other associations have been sounding the alarm about the devastating impact further disruptions will have on our supply chains.
“Farmers, manufacturers, and businesses who rely heavily on our railroads were already facing the challenging prospect of recovering from the pandemic and existing stress on our supply chains, they cannot afford further disruptions. The more difficult it is to transport goods like fertilizer, cattle feed, and auto parts between critical markets the more it will have devastating effects on the Canadian economy.
“Conservatives are calling on the Liberal government to find a resolution to this dispute before it becomes another crisis in the supply chain. If the Liberal government fails to do so we will face an animal health disaster and millions of dollars worth of business, jobs, and our recovery are at risk.”
