Conservatives Call for Emergency Committee Meetings to Review Liberal Spending

Conservative Members of the Standing Committee on Transport, Infrastructure and Communities and the Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration, today requested emergency committee meetings so that parliamentarians can review the Liberal government’s spending.

“Parliament should be sitting right now, so that we could be debating ideas and making sure that the Liberal government has a plan to restart our economy.  But with the help of the NDP, Justin Trudeau shamefully shut it down until at least the fall,” said Todd Doherty, Conservative Shadow Minister for Transport. “Oversight and accountability are fundamental parts of our democracy. But since Justin Trudeau lost his majority in the fall, there hasn’t been a single debate on government spending and now the Liberals are trying to ram through the estimates.”

That is why Conservative Members of the Transport Committee and Citizenship and Immigration Committee sent letters to their respective Clerks today requesting emergency meetings to examine the Trudeau government’s spending. At the emergency meetings, Conservatives intend to call the Minister of Transport, the Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, and the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship to answer questions.

“Unfortunately, the Liberals spent weeks trying to shut down Parliament, instead of looking for ways to ensure that it could safely reopen. They have only allocated four hours to study and debate billions of dollars worth of new spending,” added Luc Berthold, Conservative Shadow Minister for Infrastructure and Communities. “That is not how our democracy is supposed to work.”

Peter Kent, Conservative Shadow Minister for Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship added, “We will also be moving motions to call Ministers to the committees that are currently meeting virtually, so that we can question them and get answers for Canadians. Taxpayers deserve to see where their money is going.  Conservatives will continue to use all of the tools at our disposal to hold the Trudeau government accountable.”
