Ottawa, ON – Today, Dan Mazier, Member of Parliament for Dauphin-Swan River-Neepawa introduced Bill C-288, An Act to Amend the Telecommunications Act:

“Many Canadians purchase internet services at sky-high prices only to realize that the quality and speed they expected to receive is nowhere near what they actually receive.

“Rural Canadians in particular, feel they are not receiving the internet service they are paying for.

“A lack of accurate information when choosing an internet service provider can result in consumers overpaying, user complaints, and not purchasing the best-fit service; it also results in a lack of competition within the telecom industry.

“Bill C-288 will enable Canadians to make more informed purchasing decisions by requiring internet companies to provide a reliable indicator of the speeds a consumer can expect during a peak usage period.

“The proposals in Bill C-288 are not new and have been successfully implemented by countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia.

“All Canadians deserve access to accurate and transparent information, and I look forward to advancing this non-partisan legislation in Parliament.”
