Ottawa, ON – John Barlow, Conservative Shadow Minister for Agriculture, Agri-Food and Food Security, Richard Lehoux and Warren Steinley, Associate Shadow Ministers for Agriculture, Lianne Rood, Conservative Shadow Minister for Federal Economic Development Agency for Eastern, Central and Southern Ontario, and Ben Lobb, Conservative Shadow Minister for Digital Government, announced the passage of Bill C-234, An Act to amend the Greenhouse Gas Pollution Pricing Act, at the Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food.

This week, Conservative members of the Agriculture Committee passed Bill C-234 which will exempt the expensive Liberal carbon tax from natural gas and propane used on farms to produce the quality, nutritious food Canadians need and the exports that help drive our economy.

This Conservative Bill was introduced in the House of Commons by Conservative Member of Parliament Ben Lobb to address the strain placed on our farmers who have no other option to dry their grain, heat their barns, or run their operations.

“Bill C-234 is all about ensuring farmers’ environmental contributions are fairly recognized and to ensure Canada’s food supply remains secure and sustainable now and into the future,” said MP Lobb.

“This exemption is needed to reflect the realities of the entire Canadian agriculture industry and the undue financial burden the carbon tax places on all the necessary practices undertaken by farmers and ranchers like drying grain, irrigating crops, or heating and cooling livestock barns,” said MP Barlow. “Conservatives recognize for generations farmers have a record of being environmental stewards and innovators, adopting the latest technologies and sustainability practices. We will continue to champion agriculture in Canada and fight the Liberal carbon tax every step of the way to ensure farm families are environmentally and economically sustainable,” concluded MP Barlow.
